‘I’m a person first and a diagnosis second.’ So says one of those mental health service users featured in an innovative video I came across recently. The film, entitled ‘Stigma and Mental Illness‘ is a joint project of the IWK Health Centre and the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC). It was designed to help combat the stigma attached to mental illness and is used to educate health care providers who work with children and youth.
Those of us who live with mental illness will without doubt encounter stigma and prejudice in its many guises. Education is the key to combating ignorance and to ‘normalise’ how we are treated in health care settings and wider society. So spread this video (and its message) far-and wide!
