According to American paediatrician Nadine Burke Harris, childhood trauma isn’t just something you just get over as you grow up. In her excellent TED talk, Harris explains that the repeated stress of abuse, neglect and parents struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues has real, measurable effects on brain development. This has life-long ramifications, to the degree that those who’ve experienced significant trauma are at triple the risk for heart disease and lung cancer. Harris makes her point cogently and eloquently, that is that medicine needs to address the prevention and treatment of trauma, as a matter of urgency.
